What’s Bugging You?

So, I’m normally a pretty happy person. I don’t let many things bother me and I try to look at the glass half full, but I’ll tell you tonight was just a darn struggle. It’s just been one of those weeks and it’s only Wednesday. If you read this little blog regularly than you’ll know that 3 weeks ago I fell at the most Magical place on Earth.  The sweet doctor told me it was sprained, but could likely have a fracture that couldn’t be seen.  She put a splint on my leg that went up to my neck. I kid you not! I was in tears, worried I had ruined our babies’ vacation.  So instead of following her orders and not using my ankle, I tore off the splint, wrapped it up and walked 900 miles the next 5 days. Then I came back and taught for 3 weeks and It didn’t really hurt that much at all. But I decided that it was finally time to have it looked at, to make sure I didn’t do any damage.  Well guess what teacher friends, this is my view from above:

And to top it all off, it’s 8000 degrees here right now and we are suppose to go to the Reds game tomorrow with 60 plus students and their parents. Plus our seats are literally at the TOP!! I also have a wedding to go to this Saturday which is a whole other story. Boot + Dress = Fashion Emergency! Yes I am vain, and yes I might take the boot off and replace it with a fabulous new shoe I bought.  SHHH! Don’t tell my doctor.

In other news, we’ve been learning about non-fiction like nobody’s business.  My kiddos are writing “All About Books” and in Reader’s Workshop we’re learning about non-fiction features and using them to help us find important information.  We always do this cute little non-fiction conventions notebook of Jennifer Jones. If you haven’t been to Hello First Grade, then GOODBYE you better go like NOW.  Well actually… read to the end and then you can leave me.  Today we discussed labels. Do you like Ms. Fabulous Fish? She’s had one too many collagen injections, but she works just the same for labeling purposes.
We’ve also been learning about insects this week.  My sweet friend Deanna Jump...(ever heard of her?) created an adorable Insect Unit.  You must check it out.  It’s perfect, because she includes her own “All About” book and tons of other fun activities.
We are currently using this poem:
It’s to the tune of “If you’re happy and you know it”.
We also created a chart of Schema/New Learning and Misconceptions. Then read her cute book and assessed student’s learning with her bug building activity.  To grab it you can click here.!

In other news I have about one or two more days worth of work and my Punctuation Unit will be ready.  If I could focus for more than 5 minutes, it might be done by now, but you all understand what May in “Teacher Land” looks like. Add a big old broken ankle, two baby boys, a dog and a husband and it’s a miracle I’m still even sane. Here’s a little peak at one of the activities that will included in the unit.

Have a great night friends!

  3. I broke my ankle the day before we went to Disneyworld and didn't tell a soul – just went for 10 days and sucked it up. The day after we landed back home, I went to the doctor, got yelled at and was put in a lovely boot too. I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only stubborn person on earth, ha ha! I feel for ya! Lisa
