Saturday Soup!

So this is just another post full or randomness and such! So hold on for the ride because I’m taking you all over the place today!

1. In addition, I’ve got about 2,000 items on to-do list for this weekend and about 1 ounce of ambition!
One of the many tasks I must complete are report cards and data collection sheets.  So I thought I’d share how I keep track of my students assessments throughout the year.

Here are our first grade portfolios.

So, It’s split into 5 sections: Reading, Writing, Math, Spelling, and Other. This portfolio only holds assessments and important documents. In addition, the “reading” section contains our sight word data sheet and DRA’s.  The “writing” section contains end of unit published pieces and end of the quarter writing prompts.  The math section contains all of our math assessments for the year.  The “spelling” section contains, spelling tests of course and the “other” section contains interims and report cards, as well as any other important documentation sent home.  Also, I love these portfolios because they also serve as my guide for conferences.  Besides, we simply go through the assessments and I comment on progress. I’ll be using these to help me fill out the dreaded report cards as well!

2. You have to check out:

She has a FAB-U-LOUS Fairytale unit for FREE!
You have to go grab it. I did!

3. Furthermore don’t forget to grab my Butterfly Compound Word Center in honor of Sgt. Brian Dulle killed in line of duty.
4. Lettering Delights is having a sale!
So just enter the coupon code UndertheSea at checkout and get 40% off. To go to Lettering Delights click on their button on the left hand side of my page.
5.  I will be finishing up my picnic unit soon!
I promise. I just need a kick in the pants and two boys that don’t want to be outside every second of the day!

  1. Do your students provide the binders for their portfolios or do you? I, unfortunately, did not learn about portfolios in college. I've gleaned a little information from teacher blogs and my mentor. I'd love to start them next year, but I don't know where I'd get the binders from.

  2. Jana- I didn't do them my first few years either, but I do love them for conferences. We put the binders on our supply list for first grade. I print the covers, and get the dividers all ready before they come and then just put them together the first week of school. But if you can't do that, they have super cheap 6-8 packs of the view binders at Sams and Costco.

  3. How did you learn to do them? I figured I'd organize like you did, by content and then standards. But did you have any training or was it a learn as you go thing? I am definitely a visual learner and sometimes need to see things done to help me out. Thanks for the visuals and descriptions and for letting me ask you tons of questions. 🙂

  4. I went to a conference where she included much more. That was too overwhelming and not what I needed. I just wanted something that would keep only the benchmarks throughout the year. 🙂

  5. I've lost all ambition and motivation to do anything this close to the end of the school year – too bad there's still so much to do 🙂

  6. Hi Michelle,
I was wondering if your Strategic Assessment Tool for sight words and your writing rubric were available to download. I really like how you have them both set up.
Thanks for sharing your assessment binder!!!!

  7. I just have to say that I LOVE the fact that you are donating all the proceeds from your game on TPT to Officer Dulle's fund. I live in Maineville, so I'm just down the road from you! Also, I just heard that they confirmed a tornado went theough Liberty Twp. yesterday. Hope all is okay for you and your family!

  8. I taught this past school year at VLT Academy, which is a charter school in Over the Rhine. Let me just say that was an experience! Next year I will be teaching 2nd grade at Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy. They are opening a new K-6 campus just outside of Mariemont. I can't wait to get started! Where are you teaching?
